WINNEBAGO COUNTY - Authorities release new information on the Cherryvale Mall murder investigation. Now, they need the public's help to find the person behind it. They hope a surveillance photo will help them find the shooter.
Police believe the driver of a gold or tan GMC Yukon is responsible for killing a DeKalb man outside the mall. Ricky Smith died after being shot while driving on near the Macy's parking lot on February 23rd. Winnebago County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Mike Schultz says since then -- their department has looked through surveillance caught on all 290 mall cameras.
"In total we have about 490 hours worth of video that we have been going through," said Schultz. "That vehicle was seen in the parking lot the time of the shooting."
Investigators say they hope someone will recognize the car and call them with its location or owner.
"Most people recognize the small nuances of their own vehicle," said Schultz. "If there's something about that particular vehicle, whether it be a dent or something hanging from the mirror, something about that car. Somebody knows that as their vehicle."
Smith's murder is the third shooting at Cherryvale Mall in just the last two years. In one case, gunfire struck the outside of the mall. The other, a gunman shot a victim in a wheelchair twice.
"It's suppose to be safe place for all of us to be able to go and safely shop," said said Schultz. "[A safe place to] let our kids go to and safely shop. It's just a place where we don't want violence to happen."
The gunman is considered armed and dangerous. Should anyone spot the suspect's vehicle to call police right away.
"Obviously if this person is willing to shoot in open daylight in a mall, they're capable of doing anything."
