JANESVILLE - A local doctor learns abusing his power is not a good idea.
Richard Barney, 53, was sentenced to two years of probation and a $3,000 fine for prescription fraud. He pled guilty to the charge in December. Barney also must surrender his DEA registration, which allowed him to prescribe controlled substances.
In April 2013, a staff member at Northpointe Hospital saw a prescription for Percocet submitted to an Instymed machine by Barner. She realized Barney had not worked that day and informed hospital officials.
Surveillance footage caught Barney taking the medication from the machine. Hospital records determined Barney wrote Percocet prescriptions for patients he hadn't seen and at times paid for it using his own credit card.
Barney obtained the drug approximately 95 times.
