"It's definitely been the most difficult eight months for any of us, but just trying to get through each day," said Katrina's Sister Miraynda Castro.
This is just one of the fields that family friends and an entire community canvassed just days after just days after Katrina Smith's disappearance. Her husband Todd Smith is now in jail accused of her murder. Her family says they're coping the best that they can.
Now Katrina's family wants to thank the community and honor her memory with a balloon launch on her birthday.
"It started with the yellow ribbons, and then the yellow carnations, and everything so I figured just yellow balloons," explained Castro.
Katrina's sister Miraynda Castro is planning the memorial. She'll use the event to announce the foundation she's started in her sister's name.
Castro will graduate with her nursing degree soon. She says it's what Katrina would want.
"For me personally just to get back in school right away and just surround myself with my friends and family, and try to keep busy. And do the things that I know she would want me to do," said Castro.
And with the strength of her family Castro is getting through the loss of her sister and pouring her heart into the new foundation.
"Just relying on each other just to get through it. It's been rough to say the least," said Castro.
