Made in the Stateline: IMA Automation

ROCKFORD -

When you do something you think is exciting, you want everyone to know about it.  The same can be said for businesses, especially if it ships things all over the world.

"We want people within Rockford to understand the kind of technology that's being developed [here]," said IMA Automation North America General Manager Andy Bittman."

The technology coming from IMA is pretty advanced and company executives are proud to show it off.

"Our company manufactures automated assembly equipment that produces parts of the automotive medical device, caps, and closures, and the consumer goods industries," said IMA Director of Sales Paul Beduze.

That's why IMA opened their doors recently to the public.  People who showed up got to see the equipment in action.  The business has been around 1987 and was founded in Rockford.  Back then, the automotive industry was its main focus.  Now, it's in a 55,000 sq. ft. Loves Park building and was just recently acquired by IMA SPA based in Bologna, Italy.

"30 years later, the technology has changed and people have changed as well," said Beduze.  "We still have some people that started with the company back then.  The advantage [is] this is now the headquarters for IMA Automation in North America."

That's the company's new name.  It used to be called Komax Systems Rockford.  The open house is part of a re-introduction to customers and the community.

"All these machines are focused on really developing a product so they basically build a product up," said Bittman.  "Some of them are very high speed, up to 400 parts per minute.  Some of them take a little more time and they might develop a medical product like a syringe or an auto injector.

IMA needs people with a wide range of skills, like mechanical engineering, controls engineering, and machine builders.  IMA has a couple of interns from Rock Valley College and Rockford University.

"We're looking for people who are good with their hands," said Bittman.  "We're looking for people that are good with technology, as well as other positions within the company."
