ROCKFORD - A woman is in the hospital after being shot in the head by a stray bullet.
The shooting happened at Keye-Mallquist Park near the corner of 11th Street and 16th Avenue. Police say people began shooting at each other during an argument, and one of the bullets traveled up 16th Avenue and into an upstairs apartment in the 1600 block of Parmele Street.
Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies and Rockford Police Officers responded to the apartment at around 7 p.m. They interviewed witnesses and searched for evidence. According to her father, the victim -- Alzura Prunty -- is a mother of four. Her father says she was shot in the head and the bullet is lodged in her skull.
He approached our crew after learning about his daughter and had a message for the Rockford community.
"It's time that we step up and do something about this," said Floyd Prunty. "That is my daughter, and I'm done. I've been to two funerals from Fairgrounds, where I happened to be there, when I saved those children from the gun battle, never thinking for one moment that my child would be involved in it. It's time out, Rockford. It's time for us to stand up and do something. Stop talkin' in our homes, stop being relaxed unless it touches our family. We have to do something. A police officer was shot the other night. And if they don't care about police, be damned if they care about the citizens of Rockford, Illinois."
Rockford Park District Police are investigating the incident. They do not have any suspects at this time.
