Man Who Kept Charitable Contributions for Himself Sentenced

ROCKFORD -- A Dakota man convicted of bilking 3600 victims out of $120,000 will spend nearly five years in a federal prison. 34-year-old Clifford Edwards Jr. was also ordered to pay $122,468 in restitution by federal judge Frederick Kapala.

Edwards pleaded guilty to operating two charities, Helping Out, LLC and the Smiles for Kids Foundation, which made telemarketing type calls asking for donations. Edwards and his employees would then tell people they were collecting money for kids with cancer or benefit poor children, which was a lie. Edwards admitted he kept the money for himself.

The three year scheme ended with Edwards arrest in June of 2013.
