The Mexican Consulate from Chicago brought their mobile consulate to Rockford this week, helping provide Mexican nationals in the area with documentation, such as passports and IDs.

"[Rockford] is the third largest area [in Illinois] with Mexican nationals,” said Alfredo Gomez, from the mobile program of the Mexican Consulate in Chicago.

They spent part of the week at the Second Congressional church and they saw over 800 people.

Gomez said, "[This] is the way that the Mexican people can connect with their Mexican government, so we can have a list of all the Mexican nationals here in this area."

This event provided local residents with the opportunity of getting documentation here, as oppose to having to make the drive to the Chicago office.

But documentation wasn't the only focus--stateliners also had the opportunity to learn about local services and health information.

"It’s an opportunity to give them also information on security, safety, health, education, jobs, and in their language,” said Mary Lou Castro, the president to LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) of Rockford.
