(Havana)  --  Georgia's Republican governor says he wants to expand free trade between the United States and Cuba.
Governor Sonny Perdue made the statement at the end of a Georgia trade delegation's trip to the island nation.
Republicans often take a tough stance toward communist-run Cuba.
However, America's longstanding trade embargo against Cuba exempts agricultural goods.
The state of Georgia exported more than 42-million dollars worth of poultry and other goods to the island last year.
Perdue also says expanding trade between the U.S. and Cuba would help the two sides resolve their political differences.
Since taking office in early 2009, President Obama has allowed Cuban-Americans to travel more freely to their homeland.
