Produce, meat and other fresh foods are finally coming to Rockford’s West side.
City council voted yes today to opening a new Save A Lot grocery store near the Northwest corner of West State Street and Central Avenue. This would be the second save a lot location in Rockford. The area has been categorized as a food desert, but council members say this grocery store could change that. The City of Rockford is working with IFF, a non profit developer to bring in the store.
The grocery store would cover about 15,000 square feet, so contractors would be looking to remove some properties around the intersection to make room. Although the item did pass tonight in council Alderman Linda McNealy voted no saying she does not believe this save a lot is what the West side needs.
