ROCKFORD - The Forest City earns positive marks in the latest metro area unemployment report.
According to the Illinois Dept. of Employment Security, the Rockford metro area's unemployment rate is now 8.9%, down from 10.3% in May 2013. It's all thanks to 1,100 new jobs, which is 4th best in the state behind Chicago, Springfield, and Lake County-Kenosha County.
"Growing consumer confidence and its related discretionary spending is pushing this economy forward" IDES Director Jay Rowell said. "we must not rest, however, until this improving economy touches every doorstep in our state."
Bloomington-Normal and Springfield both have the lowest unemployment rates with 6.0%. Despite the improvement, Rockford has the third highest unemployment rate, in front of Decatur (9.1%) and Danville (9.4%).
