CHICAGO - The state passes a bill to help those who've been adopted to learn more about their biological family.
Gov. Pat Quinn signed HB-5949 Wednesday morning in Chicago. The law allows adoptees to obtain their original birth records.
"People have a right to know the first chapter of their lives" says Quinn. "This information can also be vital when determining inherited traits and medical history."
In the past ten years, approximately "17,000 children have been adopted" says Dept. of Children and Family Services ACting Director Bobbie Gregg.
The law takes effect January 1, 2015.
