But hidden within the details of the poll are serious vulnerabilities for both candidates.
For Rauner, those vulnerabilities lie in a gender gap, and questions over whether the billionaire has been paying his fair share of taxes.
The poll of 940 likely voters found that the Republican had a big lead among likely male voters, but was in a virtual dead heat when it came to women voters. Then, this statement was read -- “Republican Bruce Rauner’s tax returns for 2010 and 2011 show that despite making around $55 million, he was not required to pay Social Security or Medicare taxes." 2-out-of-3 women said the issue would make them less likely to vote for Rauner.
For Quinn, the poll shows questions over his handling of money and the subsequent investigation into the 'Neighborhodd Recovery Initiative' scandal could prove equally damaging to his campaign. The poll told voters, “It was recently reported that a program implemented by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is under federal investigation for misuse of government funds." 60% of ALL respondents said the investigation would make them less likely to vote to re-elect the Governor.
