DeKalb- The atmosphere is lively in DeKalb for NIU Homecoming. Students and alumni tailgating in anticipation of watching the Huskies take the football field.

But this homecoming means a little bit more for the Dumdie family. Their son Army Specialist Matt Dumdie came home to be an honorary captain.

Dumdie only gets to come home twice a year so seeing his family for the homecoming ceremony was an added plus.

Specialist Dumdie says “I was definitely interested in doing it. I was a little worried but yes I was very excited.”

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Gary Dumdie is happy he got to spend the weekend with his son.

Chief Gary Dumdie says “the whole family is proud of what he does and as am I. It means a lot to us that he was asked and able to return home.”

Matt Dumdie spoke on the community support adding “it’s great. I’m real honored that I got to come out, and I’m not much for being in the spotlight but its really nice to see that the community cares especially when you come back home.”
