Organizations Help Families Back-to-School Shop

Back-to-School Shopping begins for families and students

ROCKFORD - The summer is coming to a close and if you're a parent of a student, this is shopping season for you. Saturday afternoon, some local organizations helped families to lessen the strain of having to buy school supplies for the upcoming academic year.

Many were out and about shopping for school supplies, but some were enjoying the weather by receiving some free giveaways to help alleviate the stressful back-to-school shopping. Hundreds of children and their parents filled Blackhawk Park.  Parents and their kids lined up for the back-to-school supply giveaway.

Ministry of Restorations sponsoring the event.  Pastor Ruby Martin says supporting the students of the community couldn't have been done without the help of vendors and donors.

"[It's about] Bringing a positive statement that we care.," said Ruby.  "All the organizations that are represented, is that we care for our youth and for our city, for our neighborhood and precincts and what have you, here in Rockford."

Many different religious organizations, like Prayer Warrior were there to help support and pray with families, like Prayer Warrior Helen Boggess.  They attended the giveaway to help with the transition from summer fun to school work.

"We have a great opportunity since were here with the school supply," said Boggess. "Doing this for three years, give us a great opportunity to pray for those who just don't come only for school supplies, but also come for prayer."

Those who attended for school supplies, left with a little bit more.

Athena Higgins, also apart of the Prayer Warrior group says she and her daughter are already planning for the new school year.

"Just getting our school supplies ready, talks about school, praying about school." said Higgins.

As parents shop for their kids, say it has been stressful going through the list for what their student needs to be prepared. For student, Brylen Gilbert, he has a mix of emotions.

"I'm kind of excited kind of not," said Gilbert. " I'm excited I get to go back to meet my friends."

As summer comes to a close, Gilbert has a message for his peers.

"hello, good luck!" said Gilbert.

Parents and students can go on their school's district website to find the appropriate supply list.
