Pentagon: No Signs Marine Urination Video Is Fake
The Pentagon says there are no signs so far that a video allegedly depicting Marines urinating on Afghan corpses is a fake.
Pentagon spokesman Captain John Kirby says, quote, "it certainly appears to us to be what it appears to be to you guys." Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is using the word "deplorable" to describe the video.
It apparently shows at least four Marines exposing themselves before desecrating the bodies.
A caption with the video reads, quote, "scout sniper team 4 with 3rd battalion 2nd marines out of Camp Lejeune peeing on dead talibans." Panetta is vowing to punish the people involved in the video. Pentagon officials say they're working to verify the authenticity of the video and identify the Marines involved.
A spokesman for the Taliban denounced the video, calling it "a barbaric act." However, the organization says the video will not negatively influence planned negotiations with the U.S.
The White House is expected to begin peace talks with the Taliban sometime next week.
