Apprentices Show Off Their Skills in Plumbing Industry Competition

ROCKFORD - Starting a good career, no matter what the industry, can take a lot of training.

Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 23 hosted the Illinois Plumbing and Piping Industry Skills Competition.  About two dozen apprentices from across Illinois are participating.

They got a chance to show off what they know in areas like pipefitting, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, and sprinkler fitting.

Contestants are put in different situations, from rooftop HVAC project to performing some electrical troubleshooting.  It takes a lot to get to this level.

"These apprentices go to school for five years," said Local 23 Training Coordinator Greg Harle.  "This is them showing off their ability, education that they've learned in those five years."

Winners go on to the district competition this summer in Minnesota.  The next step is the international contest this August in Ann Arbor, MI.
