Police Ask Public To Dispose of Unused Drugs Correctly

In April, Americans turned in 450 tons of prescription drugs at Take Back events

ROCKFORD - The Drug Enforcement Administration is teaming up with local police agencies to further tackle the country's drug problem. Saturday marks National Drug Take Back Day and the Freeport Police Department took part. Residents got the opportunity to stop by the Cub Foods parking lot and drop off expired or unused medications, no questions asked.

"There's no other place to take them so we'll get rid of them for you if you bring them out here," said Freeport Police officer Jeff Mastroianni.

Mastroianni says most people make the mistake of trying to dispose of the drugs themselves without realizing all the potential risks. "People just drop off their expired prescription drugs or the drugs they aren't using anymore rather than throw them into the landfill or down the toilet to get into the water system."

And with our nation in the midst of an opioid crisis, police are saying we all have to do our part to avoid the epidemic from getting worse.

"The other main part of this is so it doesn't end up into the hands of those who abuse prescription drugs," said Mastroianni. "People that you wont even know might take them from your house and you might not even know it that they did."

Posing a vital public safety and public health issue, disposing of unwanted prescription drugs should be a priority year round.

"Freeport Police Department also has a metal bin that you can bring in your prescription drugs there throughout the year. So, if you have them and if you live here in town, wanna drop them off, come to the Freeport Police department. it's right in the front lobby."
