Police Make Arrest for August Gang Shooting in Freeport

Gang-related shooting left one man in serious condition; the victim survived.

FREEPORT - Demario Williams, 25, is in police custody, charged in the shooting that seriously injured a rival gang member last week.

On Thursday, August 3, police responded to the shooting in the area of Cottonwood Street and Grove Avenue. There they found a victim in serious condition suffering from a gunshot wound. Almost immediately, police identified the incident a continuation of a feud between two local street gangs.

Williams was identified as a suspect in the shooting. On Wednesday, Freeport Police received a warrant for his arrest. On Thursday, he was located and arrested without incident.

An investigation is ongoing, additional arrests and charges are possible.

Freeport authorities say the feud between the two gangs has been ongoing since 2012, and that it has been responsible for the majority of the illegal gun violence that has taken place in Freeport since 2012.
