Janesville Police say person who reported the story admitted they made it up.

JANESVILLE - Janesville Police say reports that a puppy turned into a local animal shelter was thrown into the Rock River prior to being rescued is false.

The department investigated the claims after widespread social and news media reports. Officers interviewed the person who turned the dog in and provided the story of how it was thrown into the river. During that interview, they learned that the story was made up.

Police say the person in question fabricated the story to avoid paying the humane society a fee to surrender the dog.

There will be no criminal charges as no false statements were made to police.
