ROCKFORD - An intense situation for a police officer disarms a suspect.

It happened Sunday around 6pm.  Police were initially called to Central and Sherman for two men walking in the area.  One of them was believed to have a gun and heading to Andrews Park.

As officers approached them the suspects ran away.  As they were running, one of them pulled out a gun.  The suspect, later identified as 20 year-old Devante Turner, ran into the backyards in the 900 block of Independence Avenue.  An officer was able to get close to Turner, but police say Turner spotted the officer and pointed his gun at him.  The officer, however, was close enough that he tackled Turner and wrestled the gun away from him.  During the struggle, Turner bit the officer on the arm.

Turner faces several charges, including aggravated battery to a police officer, and felony resisting arrest.  He is currently in custody at the Winnebago County Jail.
