ROCKFORD -- Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato made a surprise announcement during a news conference Friday morning about a hit and run accident on State Street which killed two Chinese citizens.

The man initially arrested in the case was not the driver of the vehicle.

22-year-old Tyler McCullough now faces two felony counts of hit and run and failure to report an accident. Police had originally arrested 49-year-old Dean H.McCullough of 2134 Pengate Parkway in Belvidere, believed to by Tyler's father, after police got a tip from someone who had seen media reports about the SUV involved in the crash.

Police allege Tyler McCullough was driving the SUV which hit two men late at night in December west of the I-90 overpass, and then took off. After releasing a description of the vehicle involved, police executed a search warrant and located a maroon 1999 GMC Jimmy in the attached garage at the Belvidere home. The vehicle had significant front end and passenger side damage.

Eyewitness reports indicated that two men were in the vehicle, and 'Eyewitness News' is seeking clarification as to whether police believe Dean McCullough may have also been in the SUV, and whether he will still face any other charges.

More information as we get it on this developing story.
