Rockford Listed as America's 5th Most Dangerous City

Finance and opinion website 24/7 Wall St. compiled the "most dangerous" list.

ROCKFORD - Rockford falls into the top five of a list of America's most dangerous cities.

The list was compiled by finance and opinion website 24/7 Wall St. They based the rankings on the violent crime rate in cities with at least 100,000 people. Eyewitness News reported Wednesday that Rockford had the highest violent crime rate of any 'large city' in Illinois, according to new statistics from the FBI.

There were 1,659 violent crimes per 100,000 Rockford residents in 2016, which was the 5th most of any U.S. city, and the most of any city with between 100,000 and 200,000 people. 2016 was the deadliest year in Rockford in two decades with a total of 26 homicides.

24/7 Wall St.'s top 5 most dangerous was as follows:

1. Detroit, MI
2. St. Louis, MO
3. Memphis, TN
4. Baltimore, MD
5. Rockford, IL

Springfield came in at 19 on the list, Chicago was 24. The full top 25 list can be found here.
