Rockford Man Charged with Attempted Murder, Second Suspect on the Run

ROCKFORD- A rainy, cold night gives way to Rockford’s latest shooting.

"I’m not safe anymore. I don't like this neighborhood anymore. I’m ready to move," said Neighbor Joy Moore.

Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a house in the 500 block of Vincent Avenue for a complaint.

"I was lying on the couch and I noticed lights, red and blue lights going on and off on and off. I couldn’t ignore them. They woke me up," said Neighbor Dorothy Grover.

Deputies were getting ready to leave when an SUV pulled up to the home with two women and two men inside. Officers tried to stop the car. That’s when the men jumped out and started running.

Anthony Dominquez, 21, fired one round at Deputy James Abate. Abate shot Dominquez several times in the legs and upper shoulder.

"The warrant is on file now for his arrest. He’s under guard at the hospital and once he's released from the hospital he'll be transported to jail and served with a warrant," explained Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro.

Grover says the neighborhood is typically peaceful. "We've got good neighbors. We know the neighbors all around. Nothing like this has ever happened before," said Grover.

Dominquez is expected to survive and faces several charges including attempted murder. The second man who fled from the SUV Matt Lawrence, 23, still hasn't been found.

He’s wanted on an unrelated warrant.

Deputy Chief Iasparro says the officer involved followed protocol. He’ll receive time off following the shooting.
