Owner of Denali's Pizza, Jonathan Coke searched for over a year before locating his business in
Tonight business owners, residents and neighborhood watch groups came together at the Southeast Rockford Special Area Neighborhoods meeting. "It's always a good idea to get to know your neighbor. It's a quality of life thing it's also a safety thing," said organizer Cyndie Hall.
Police and fire department officials spoke about emergency preparedness and crime. "We did notice that we were having some issues with burglaries in January. We put out a lot of directed patrols and our detectives have been very successful in the past few months. Even in the past week in arresting a lot of people involved in burglaries," said Rockford Police Department's Lt. Patrick Hoey.
In the last four months there has been a decrease in auto thefts, but an increase in residential burglaries and robberies. Whether you live next to a business, apartment complex or home police have several recommendations.
"We need to get neighbors talking, to watch out for each other so you get to know your neighbor's patterns and so forth. So when you see someone at their house when you know they're at work you want to scrutinize that, take a look if something doesn't seem right. We need the people to report the crimes," said Lt. Hoey.
A tip that's key to improving safety for everyone.
"The more we can get residents working together on issues in our community the better we can solve things," explains Hall.
