Rockford Teen Pleaded Guilty to Murder

ROCKFORD - The first of three Rockford teens accused in the shooting death of a 17 year-old is headed to prison.

Martaivis Harmon, 18 pleaded guilty Thursday in Winnebago County Court for the murder of Akeem Smith.  The shooting happened inside a garage in the 3200 block of Parkside Ave. in March of 2016.  Police said a fight broke out between the four teens and shots were fired.

Officers arrested Harmon after he showed up at the hospital with gunshot wounds.  He faces up to 20 years in prison.  His sentencing is set for Oct. 19th.

The two other teen suspects in the case, Javontavious Benford, 18, and Retavian Jefferson, 19, are due to appear in court in September.  They're charged with murder.
