UPDATE -- Schnucks announced Thursday the South Alpine and Rural Street locations in Rockford will close by the end of May.
Between both stores, 139 employees will be impacted, though the company says it will move them to other locations so no jobs are lost.
Bottom line? The decision came down to dollars and cents.
"They are underperforming at this point in time and have been for quite some time," said Lori Willis, Schnucks Spokeswoman. "The sales are not enough to offset the expenses of operating these two stores."
Alderman Joseph Chiarelli calls the closures "disheartening". He says the Alpine store was always a hit with locals in his ward.
"It's been a neighborhood center for many, many years and people rely on that, you know, convenience to go to that location," said Chiarelli (14th Ward). "I'm sure it will be very difficult for the people of that area."
Now he says the city needs to take more steps to keep companies like Schnucks from pulling the plug on the Forest City.
"I know we always go after new businesses, but I think our focus needs to be at the time on retaining as many businesses as we can because those are existing jobs," Chiarelli added.
In the meantime, shoppers will have to find a new place to stock up.
Schnucks also did some restructuring at it's East State Street and Loves Park stores. That eliminated 24 full and part time positions.
ROCKFORD - Two east side grocery stores will close its doors for good.
On May 31 at 5pm, the Schnucks on South Alpine Rd. and the location at Harrison will be closed. All 139 employees will be offered positions at other Schnucks locations in the Rockford area.
According to a press release, Schnucks blames low sales and high costs.
"In order to stay competitive and offer the value our customers want and need" says Schnucks CEO Todd Schnuck, "we are discontinuing services currently underutilized by the majority of our customers. Eliminating positions is always a last resort, but these are directly related to the closed functions and could not be absorbed."
Schnucks also closed the in-store restaurants and restructured related areas at the State Street location, as well as the one in Loves Park, which will lead to the elimination of 15 full and part-time positions.
