ROCKFORD - The health care deadline is a week away and the urgency for stateliners to get covered is stronger.

Less than 5 million nationwide have signed up for coverage, and penalties for not signing up are steep. If you don't have a health insurance policy before the deadline, you will pay $95 or 1% of your income, whichever is higher, on next year's tax return.

The numbers are low, but the interest is picking up.

We've seen a lot more walk-in's coming in," says Alberto Carrior of Lifescape. "A lot more phone calls of people who are interested and really don't want to have any gaps in coverage or don't want to deal with any of the tax penalties for not having any health insurance. So at this office particularly, we've seen more people coming in to get enrolled."

Lifescape is hosting another Affordable Care Act sign up event Saturday, March 29th at Memorial Hall. The event runs from 2 PM to 6 PM.
