Shovel Your Snowy Sidewalks Or Pay Up

- ROCKFORD – The Rockford City Council proposed an ordinance to keep the sidewalks clear of snow and ice in the winter.

Councilman Frank Beach said “there are a number of people who have called me personally, asking if the council is going to do anything to hold residents responsible for clearing the walkways.”

This would be a new ordinance for the City of Rockford, but surrounding cities including Madison Wisconsin and Chicago have had this ordinance for years.

The snow and ice covered walkways are not only an inconvenience, but they are also a danger.

“I was on my way to church today and I saw a girl fall on the ice, and she had to get stitches in her head. The walkways are dangerous.” said James Pickett, a Rockford resident.

For locals who walk to their destinations around the city, the snowy sidewalks have been a constant struggle.

“as a pedestrian in Rockford, you have to keep your head on the swivel, I have nearly been killed several times by motorists.” said Rockford pedestrian Dan Orsi.

Councilman Beach said that this ordinance is still in the planning process, and if it does pass it will not be until next winter.
