JANESVILLE - UPDATE (2:30PM): The Rock County Sheriff's Office is assigning deputies to the Montessori, Consolidated, Yahara, Rock County Christian and Parkview Schools Thursday afternoon as a general precaution but not because of a specific threat.
UPDATE: Police have placed local schools on a 'soft lockdown' and local, state and federal authorities are searching for a man they describe as a dangerous fugitive after a burglary at a local gun store.
They say it started with a gun burglary Tuesday night at the Armageddon Gun Shop on Highway 14. A large quantity of handguns and rifles were stolen, and a vehicle fire was reported nearby. Police say the fire was intentionally set, and both the burglary and arson were connected.
The vehicle belonged to 32-year-old Joseph A. Jakubowski, who police learned Thursday morning had become 'highly agitated recently regarding a variety of political issues.' He had also allegedly made threats to steal weapons and to use them against public officials or at an unspecified school.
Also on Thursday morning, a suspicious person who appeared to be intoxicated was seen near Lincoln Elementary School with a long gun. Police cannot connect that incident to the gun thefts or Jakubowski, but schools were placed on a soft lockdown as a result. That man is described as a white male, 6' tall with a thin build wearing round glasses driving a white, 4-door car.
As a result, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation and all local law enforcement agencies are now actively searching for him.
Anyone who has any information regarding Jakubowski’s location or the incident near Lincoln Elementary is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (608)757-7911. Police warn he is considered to be armed and dangerous.
Janesville Public Schools are on a 'soft lockdown' following a burglary at a local gun shop.
It began as Janesville Police and the Rock County Sheriff's Office investigated the theft of guns from the Armageddon Gun Shop on Highway 14. They say that during the course of the investigation, vague information was received regarding the burglary that led them to take extra precautions at local schools.
They say there are no viable threats to specific students or staff within the school district, and that more information will be shared with the public as it is obtained by law enforcement.
Anyone having information about this crime is encouraged to contact: Janesville Police Department at 755-3100 or Janesville Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 756-3636.
