WTVO/WQRF - As kids, many of us wanted nothing more than to sit behind the wheel of a big rig and honk the horn.  With truckers retiring and even fewer new ones coming in, that dream can become a reality, courtesy of a scholarship by Spirit CDL.

They're giving away a free scholarship to their truck driving school for the third year in a row. The course is five weeks. It includes, testing, physicals and training, a total value worth about $3,500.  Spirit CDL will also provide the winner with a job.

"Graduate on a Thursday or Friday. On Monday, they're starting a new job," Ken Bons of Spirit CDL says. "Beginning a new career and start providing for their families right away."

There is a demand for truck drivers right now. Many of the current ones are retiring and the younger generation just isn't interested in trucking as a career.  Bons says it wouldn't be hard for anyone looking to start a career or switch.

"These companies are jumping at the bit for people who've got over a year experience with no tickets or no accidents because they're dying for drivers," Bons says.  "If you like freedom and like to see the country it's a great job."
