State Suffers SNAP Benefit Screwup

Many have had benefits delayed until now

EYEWITNESS NEWS CAPITOL BUREAU - Thousands of families were blindsided last Friday when they didn't get their SNAP benefits from the state.

Now, a week later, the Department of Human Services say they're working to get everyone the federal aid they need.

Thursday, DHS announced SNAP benefits will be reinstated to families by Friday. For the most part, this has put a damper on the holidays for nearly 40,000 families.

Last Friday, many who are dependent on federal food stamps were left hanging. After a massive outcry and some backlash from groups like AFSCME, DHS said a new computer system was to blame.

One mother says her Link card just turned back on. She says it couldn't have been worse timing.

As of Tuesday, 16,000 people had aid reinstated. DHS says applicants who were booted from the system did not meet a November 5 deadline.

Link cards will be reinstated automatically. A spokesperson says customers do not need to come into the office or call.

In a statement, the department says, while they are comforted knowing customers will receive benefits before the holidays, they want to reiterate how important it is for customers to meet deadlines established by federal and state governments and outlined on forms they receive.
