Stateliners Mourn the Death of South Beloit Mayor

SOUTH BELOIT - Mayor Michael Duffy was first elected in April 2011. He died Friday morning at his house apparently from natural causes.

"We were notified shortly before 6:30 this morning of Mr. Duffy being unresponsive. Fire department responded along with South Beloit Police department and found out that he was unresponsive to any first aid that we were able to provide," said Chief Dean Stiegemeier from the South Beloit Police Department.

Many people have called the South Beloit School District 320 office shocked with the news. Duffy used to work there as a superintendent. People there remember him as a unique leader.

"What was always remarkable, that I would always tease him about, is that after he retired instead of going golfing he decided to go into politics; and I was like that doesn’t seem like a possible good retirement, but that was Mr. Duffy. He had to be a public servant, he had to be involved," said Scott Fisher, current superintendent of School Dist. 320.

Also, many residents in the area remember the mayor as a great politician.

"He and his council have done a lot of improvements in South Beloit and they are getting some future business in South Beloit," said Susan Gaffey, who is the owner of the pub The Wheel in South Beloit next to City Hall.

Duffy leaves behind five children and his wife. It might take seven to ten days to have any information about the autopsy results. Any information about funeral arrangements will be shared with the public later on.
