ROCKFORD -- Winnebago County Republican Central Committee Chairman Jim Thompson won't be going anywhere. That's despite calls for his resignation after making what some are calling a racist remark.

"After consultation with my executive committee, they have decided unanimously to retain me as chair, and I am pleased to continue to serve in that capacity," said Thompson in a briefing following the meeting. Thompson declined to comment any further on the results of Tuesday's vote.

The vote comes only a day after gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner asked Thompson to resign.

Thompson is under fire for comparing President Obama to a "Zonkey" in a newsletter.
