WTVO/WQRF - It appears Illinois residents will try to get one final summer vacation in.
AAA Travel reports 1.85 million Illinoisans will travel at least 50 miles for Labor Day weekend. Most of them will do so by car. Gas prices can take some of the credit. The average price in Illinois is $3.56/g, which is down ten cents from this time last year.
"With Labor Day symbolizing the American workers' contributions to the strength and prosperity of our country, it's only fitting that millions are choosing to celebrate this positive direction with an all-American road trip" says AAA Chicago spokesperson Beth Mosher. "Consumer spending continues to outpace disposable income... Americans are more optimistic about their financial situation."
Overall, AAA says nearly 35 million Americans will travel. Historically, Labor Day weekend is a popular time for Americans to travel. It's also a popular time for hotels to increase their rates by an average of 9%, according to AAA.
