UPDATE: Alleged Lawyer Killer Transferred to Winnebago County Jail

- UPDATE (4/25/14): A judge approved Wanke's request Friday to transfer from the Stateville Correctional Facility to the Winnebago County Jail.  Wanke initially requested a transfer to the Dixon Correctional Center so he could find a Rockford-area lawyer to represent him.  Judge Rosemary Collins, instead, transferred him to the Winnebago County Jail.  Wanke is next due in court May 2.  He hopes to have a lawyer hired by then, otherwise the court will appoint one for him.

ROCKFORD- The 1700 block of Oakforest Drive is quiet and peaceful, but on Feb. 6, 2008 it was the scene of a deadly shooting. The victim was Rockford attorney Gregory Clark. Now Clark's one-time client is charged with murder.

"The grand jury of Winnebago County has returned an indictment of murder against Richard Wanke, 52, for the killing of Rockford attorney Gregory Clark," said Winnebago County States Attorney Joe Bruscato.

Wanke was arrested at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill. He’s been serving a 14 year sentence for burglary.

Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato says the timeline varies for each case when it comes to filing charges.

"The State's Attorney's Office does not comment on the evidence in a case while a prosecution is pending," said Bruscato.

Rockford Deputy Police Chief Dave Hopkins explains the process has been methodical and grueling in this case.

"These types of investigations do not stop. They continually move forward and what we're looking for is the resolution that we have here today," said Hopkins.

The first degree murder charge Wanke faces is punishable by up to 60 years in prison. He’s due in court next week.
