UPDATE (7/31/14): A federal jury has found Smith guilty of kidnapping, according to WKOW, the ABC affiliate in Madison. Smith's sentencing is scheduled for October. A conviction of a federal kidnapping charge carries a minimum penalty of 25 years in prison.
MADISON -- Jury selection has begun in the kidnapping case against 31-year-old Kristen Smith, who is accused of taking a newborn from a Beloit home back in January.
Police say Smith, who is the aunt of the then just days old newborn 'Baby Kayden,' took the baby during a family gathering en route back to her home in Colorado.
She then allegedly left him in a tote bag at an Iowa gas station after family members contacted her by phone, and was arrested in Iowa soon afterward. There were indications she had faked being pregnant and may have intended to keep the child as her own.
Because she crossed state lines, Smith is being tried in a U.S. District court in Madison on federal kidnapping charges. If convicted, Smith faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison.
