UPDATE: Freeport Shooting Victim Dead

UPDATE (4/10/14): The Winnebago Co. Coroner's Office announced Melissa Nickel, 31, has died as a result of a gunshot wound.  She died at 6:44pm Wednesday.

UPDATE (video): Parents and school administrators say how Freeport High School dealt with the violent incident that occurred just a few blocks from the school.

UPDATE (4/9/14): The female victim is still alive despite being shot in the head.  She's in critical condition at an area hospital.

Investigators confirm the shooter and the victim knew each other.  In fact, they lived together.  The suspect and victim have still not been identified.

UPDATE: Here's what we know at Eyewitness News so far...

Police were dispatched to a call of shots fired in the 600 block of Elk st. around 4:50pm. They found a female  victim lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds and was later airlifted to Madison, Wisconsin. Officers arrived on scene and after refusing to give up his gun, shot the suspect. He's now at Freeport Memorial. Illinois State Police are now handling the investigating.

FREEPORT -- Freeport police are on the scene of a shooting at the intersection of Elk and Locust Streets about five blocks from Freeport High School.  No details are available at this time other than Freeport police tell 'Eyewitness News' they will make a statement within the next few hours regarding the incident.

A resident says he was attending the track meet at the high school when officials at first asked everyone to get inside the gym.  He then left the premises.

'Eyewitness News' has a crew on the way and will have more details as they become available.
