UPDATE: Investigation Into Rockford Police Fatal Crash Complete

UPDATE (5/20/14) - The Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force completes its investigation into a fatal car accident involving police.

The task force handed over its findings to the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office.  However, it's unknown at this time what they found.  Lt. Todd Shaver of the task force says since the matter is still an ongoing criminal investigation he can't legally share the information.  The Winn. Co. State's Attorney's office will now begin its own investigation with the task force's findings.

ROCKFORD - Robert Wilson, a 17 year old boy from Rockford, was laid to rest Saturday at the Kingdom Authority Church.

Wilson was ejected from a vehicle last week after an alleged police chase, he died from severe head trauma.

Wilson was one of the three victims from the alleged police involved car crash that happened on March 4, 2014. He was the only fatality.

Robert Wilson’s cousin said that he heard graphic details of his Wilsons death through his little brother. Lee Mattison said “he is gone, his brains were sitting on the side of him after the crash”

The crash happened after the Rockford police received a call that shots were fired at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. Officers were told a dark colored Monte Carlo was involved.

Doug Pann of the Rockford Police Department told Eyewitness News the morning of the crash that the driver lost control. “officers located a similar looking vehicle, which then sped off, and hit a tree”

Pastor Brown said that he heard different information. “there are conflicting  stories with the Rockford police department and the survivors of the accident”

Pastor Brown, who spoke with both of the surviving victims of the crash, says it was the Rockford police car that caused the fatal crash.

“the car was hit on the drivers side in the back, that caused the car to lose control and hit the tree and roll several times. so we are wondering why that story was not reported?”

Brown says that the information from the victims and the police report, just does not match up.

“it was reported that at first there was a high speed chase, and the car hit a tree, and rolled several times, then the next day there was no high speed chase.”

Wilsons family and church are looking for answers.

“We are looking to the Rockford police department to come out with the truth, because there is a loss of life here. A young man is paralyzed, and another young lady hurt. If a Rockford police car did hit the Monte Carlo and cause it to lose control, we want them to come out with the truth”

The fatal crash is still under investigation. The Rockford police department has asked the Integrity Task Force to investigate the crash.
