UPDATE: Man Behind Rockford Hit & Run Goes To Prison


UPDATE (10/24/14): Martin was sentenced to 12 years in prison Friday by Judge Patrick Heaslip.  He'll also be on Mandatory Supervised Release for two years.  According to the plea deal, Martin pled guilty to failure to report an accident involving death after leaving the scene.  It's a felony punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison.

UPDATE (5/16/14): Martin pled guilty in court Friday morning.  He's set to return to court July 18.

UPDATE -- Police have made an arrest in the hit and run crash that took the life of 51-year-old Rockford resident Todd Jackson.

32-year-old Justin L. Martin is charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident involving death and driving without insurance.  Police say more charges may still be filed.

The arrest was made after police talked with a witness who saw Jackson crossing southbound across Charles St. at 28th St. when he was hit by a car.  The vehicle did not stop and drove away.  A CrimeStoppers tips then led them to a home in the 1900 block of North Court Street, where the suspected hit and run vehicle was found and Martin interviewed by police.

ROCKFORD - Police investigate a hit and run that left a 51 year-old man dead.

It happened just after 11pm Wednesday.  A witness says the victim was walking across Charles Street when an eastbound pick-up truck struck him.  He died at a local hospital.

Identification of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the family.
