ROCKFORD - Two Winnebago County Sheriff's candidates make their pitch to voters.
Current Sheriff Gary Caruana and republican challenger Kurt Ditzler led a Q&A forum in Rockford Thursday morning. Concerns about budget cuts dominated the conversation.
The sheriff's office had to cut $4 million in the fall, which led to layoffs and program cuts. Caruana says he has the ability to lead the office through all of it. Ditzler pitched his own solution.
"Take a little bit from the mid and upper level management," said Ditzler. "Take a real good look at what you have and how you need to manage that, so you can provide the services you need... while still meeting the guidelines the county board has established."
"There's a night and day difference in management skills between Mr. Ditzler and I," said Caruana. "I will raise the bar. I'm very pro-active. I'm not reactive. If you want status quo, if you want to go back to where we were instead of moving ahead... that's [your] choice."
The two men will try to secure the republican nomination during next month's primary election.
