Winnebago County Sheriff Announces Layoffs

WINNEBAGO COUNTY - The Winnebago County Sheriff announced layoffs due to budget issues.

Those affected include courthouse security and reserve personnel.  This comes after county leaders asked Sheriff Gary Caruana to cut $4 million from his a budget, a move Caruana said would put public safety at risk.

Chief Judge Joe McGraw is in the middle of a legal battle with the county.

Last week, a judge granted a temporary injunction that required the county to pay for court officers that were deemed essential.  In a statement, McGraw says he hasn't had time to fully analyze Tuesday's layoffs.  But, he questions how Caruana will provide security at the courthouse.

Winnebago County faces a near $7 million budget deficit.  Board members are set to vote on a budget next Thursday.
