ROCKFORD - The Winnebago County Sheriff has issued approximately 80 layoff notices following a $4 million cut to his budget.
64 notices are going to Part-time Reserve Deputies who provide security at the courthouse, who have been informed their last day will be October 20th. Full-time Patrol Deputies will be re-assigned to courthouse security duties.
10 Corrections Officers will be laid off on October 26th, as well as other employees within the department.
While the cuts are severe, Sheriff Caruana says the layoffs were done in a manner so as to not threaten public safety.
