MADISON -- The woman accused of kidnapping 5-day-old 'Baby Kayden' Powell last February would receive a minimum sentence of 25 years if convicted, and a potential maximum sentence of life in a federal prison.

31-year-old Kristen Smith, also known as Kristen Pearson, allegedly took the newborn on February 6th during a family gathering in Beloit and headed towards her home in Colorado.  The family contacted her by phone, and that's when police say she left the child in a basket outside a gas station in Eastern Iowa.  Although Baby Kayden was left outside overnight in bitter cold temperatures, the child was not hurt.

The kidnapping is considered a federal crime because Smith crossed two state lines.

A new indictment filed Wednesday now means that if convicted, Smith faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 25 years and a maximum penalty of life in federal prison.  Her trial is schedule for July 28 in U.S. District Court in Madison.
