Woman Involved in Hit and Run of Local Gas Station Pump Arrested

Martha Hernandez, 27, charged with hit and run after destroying the pump.

ROCKFORD - A woman caught on surveillance camera driving into a local gas station's fuel pump, then driving off, has been identified and arrested.

During the early morning hours of Sunday, December 3, a woman driving a red Ford Crown Victoria accelerated into a gas pump at the La Chiquita gas station on South Main in Rockford. She fled the scene after destroying the pump.

Employees at La Chiquita shared video of the incident with Eyewitness News. Shortly after it aired, the mother of the man who owned the car recognized the vehicle from the news story and alerted her son.

According to Rockford Police's Traffic Division, they were tipped off by the son who said he lent the car to the woman in the video, who he identified as Martha Hernandez, 27. When she returned it, he found the damage done to the vehicle, but Hernandez claimed it got there after someone committed a hit and run on her. He alerted police after his mother saw the accident in the news story that aired last Wednesday.

On Monday, police arrested Hernandez and charged her with hit and run.
