Worst State for Lax DUI Laws? It's Not Wisconsin

Wallethub analysis ranks states on strictness of their DUI laws

WTVO/WQRF-TV - While Wisconsin has a reputation for lax DUI laws which can lead to the arrests of repeat offenders even after five, six, seven or more previous offenses, an analysis by the website Wallethub found its DUI laws are more strict than you might think when compared to other states.

The website analyzed various aspects of states' DUI laws such as required jail time, license suspensions and how many convictions are necessary before a repeat offender faces felony charges.  On that last factor, Wisconsin recently beefed up its DUI laws to make a fourth DUI conviction an automatic felony.

As a result, the state ranked 37th overall according to Wallethub.  Illinois, which has a reputation for strict DUI laws, finished a somewhat surprising 19th overall primarily because Wallethub found many other states have harsher sentences for repeat DUI offenders.

South Dakota ranked has having the least strict DUI laws while Arizona ranked as having the most strict ones.
