POPLAR GROVE - This school year North Boone School District implemented the Young Athletes Special Olympics program in Poplar Grove and Capron Elementary schools.
The purpose of the program is to introduce kids to the world of sports, and prepare them to participate in the official Special Olympics if they want to. In addition, the children learn social and communication skills.
Over 18,000 children benefit from the Young Athletes Special Olympics program in the state, according to Jen Marcello, Director of the Young Athletes Special Olympics in Illinois.
Three to seven-year-old kids can be part of this special program, many participants have some kind of disability, but others don’t. The idea is to integrate all students in the same classes to eradicate the stigma towards special education students.
