Lutheran Football Preview 2017

ROCKFORD - Lutheran's football program became a powerhouse under Bruce Bazsali. Now that he's moved on to Guilford can the Crusaders sustain what Bazasli built?

Chuck Leonard is now in charge at Lutheran. Leonard was an assistant for the Crusaders in 2012. He makes his return after four years as the head coach at Belvidere.

"I'm very excited about being here at Rockford Lutheran," says Leonard.

"I think he's like a great person. He's just very friendly with the whole team," says senior guard/defensive tackle Joshua Kornatz.

"He works really well especially having such a young team. He works real well with the young guys," says quarterback Micah Davenport.

Last season under Leonard Belvidere had one of the most explosive offenses in NIC-10 history setting multiple records.

"We're going to take some elements of what we've done at Belvidere and some elements of what's been done here at Lutheran," says Leonard of his offense. "We'll certainly try to put the kids in the best position that we can for them to have success."

With the new offense comes a new quarterback 6'4 Micah Davenport. the 210 pound QB makes his way from California.

"He really did me a solid....designing it (the offense) kind of around me, and the way I play," says Davenport. "I'm a big fan of the offense."

"He's a bigger framed kid," says Leonard of Davenport. "He's good in the run game. He's also very good with the velocity on the ball. It gets there. The ball comes out of his hand well, so we're looking for him to have a big year for us."

Davenport will have plenty of weapons at his disposal including sophomore running back Carivious "Tiger" Brown, but the offense's success will come down to Lutheran's big and experienced line with players like Joshua Kornatz, John Budzynski, Nick Ware, and Zach Frazier.

"I expect this year to be one of our best ones as well," says Kornatz. "I don't think we're going to have a losing record. I think we'll probably make the playoffs again."

"I think we're on track to have a good season which a lot of people aren't expecting," says Davenport. "All I hear from other schools and this conference and all that is 'Oh Lutheran's whole team graduated, so you guys don't really have a good chance this year', but I think we're going to surprise a lot of people."
