MACHESNEY PARK - Hononegah's Anthony Cassioppi (285) and Dakota's Maverick McPeek (220) both captured Dvorak Invitational Championship titles in their respectful weight classes.
Cassioppi (20-0) made easy work of his foes in 285. The senior heavyweight ran through the competition. Cassioppi won every match by either pin or technical fall, capping it off with a 23-8 technical-fall win over Iowa City West's Guy Snow in the final. Cassioppi has won three straight Dvorak Championships.
"It's awesome," says Cassioppi. "This is the biggest tournament we go to as a team. It's just really good to come out on top the last three years."
Dakota's Maverick McPeek (16-0) made it to the final in last year's tournament, but came up short. He did not let that happen for a second year in a row. McPeek defeated Mukwonago, Wisconsin's Aric Bohn in the final.
Bohn (16-1) is the defending 220 state champion in Wisconsin, and is ranked No. 1 in the state in his weight class. But McPeek defeated him 2-1 in a second-overtime battle.
"It just means a lot to me," says McPeek. "I mean I've been working all summer. I've been wrestling all summer. Offseason stuff just working hard in the practice room, and just being the best I can be."
It's McPeek's first Dvorak Invitational title.
