Purple Knights Get State Sendoff

Fans turned out to give Beloit Memorial's baseball team a big sendoff to State.

BELOIT - They are proud of their baseball team in Beloit. The Beloit Memorial Purple Knights are headed to State for the first time in 24 years.

The boys got a big sendoff Monday at the school as they set off for Appleton. That's where the Wisconsin State Tournament will be playing beginning Tuesday.

The Purple Knights overall record this season is only 18-10, but the guys always believed in themselves, and they got hot at the right time.

"It was all about believing," says head coach Ryan Schmitz. "The kids really believed last Tuesday when we played Janesville Craig and Verona and they've kept getting better. They grind."

"I think we've had the talent all along to do this," says catcher Steven Makinen. "We've kind of been on-and-off all year kind of and then we just kind of stuck together."

"It's pretty surreal," says pitcher/first baseman Drew Freitag. "I think it'll hit me when we get to the hotel tonight, but it's been an exciting four days here."

Beloit Memorial will play Sun Prairie in the State Quarterfinals Tuesday morning. If the Purple Knights win that game then they'll play in the semifinals Tuesday evening.
