Adult Tennis Tournaments Return to Rockford

Auburn High School hosted one of the first adult tennis tournaments since 2008.

ROCKFORD - This summer marks the first time in nine years that Rockford has hosted an adult tennis tournament. The last adult tournaments were the Carter-Gates Classic, and Northern Illinois Open. But thanks to the Forest City Tennis Center, and people like John Torrence who lead Rally Tennis, tournaments just like those are coming back.

Auburn High School's tennis courts hosted a men's singles tournament on Saturday that featured many local tennis players like Auburn graduate Neil Mediratta who won the event.

"The tennis community in Rockford everybody basically knows everybody," says Mediratta. "So I'm playing against my friends basically, and we just have a lot of fun playing in the sun."

There weren't just local tennis players in the tournament, one player even made the drive from Chicago to compete in the event.

"This is a men's open tournament so the competition's usually pretty good," says Chicago resident Derek Kaden. "I'm just trying to get better at my tennis. So this was like a good opportunity for that."
